What Is B-Roll and Why Your Business Social Media Videos Need It
The videos that stop your scroll all have this in common. Once you know what it's called, your content will never be the same.
If you have been trying to grow your small business on social media and something about your videos just feels off there is a very good chance you are missing one thing. And if you are a beginner, you probably do not even know it has a name.
It is called B-Roll. And by the end of this post, you are going to start noticing it everywhere!
What Is B-Roll? (And What Is A-Roll?)
Let's start with the basics. When you film yourself talking directly to the camera, that is called your A-Roll. It is your primary footage.
B-Roll is everything else.
It is the close-up of your hands typing. Your product sitting on the counter. Your workspace, your storefront, your morning coffee. It is the supporting footage that gives your video texture, depth, and personality. It makes viewers feel like they are inside your world instead of just watching someone talk at a camera.

Why Does B-Roll Matter for Small Business Owners?
Think about the last video you watched that felt really polished and professional. I guarantee they were not just staring at the camera the entire time. They were cutting away to other shots like their products, their process, and their space. That is B-Roll doing its job.
As a small business owner, B-Roll is what makes people feel connected to what you do. It gives your audience a peek behind the curtain. It makes your brand feel real, human, and worth following. And in a world where people are scrolling past hundreds of videos a day, that human element is what makes them stop.
The good news? You do not need a fancy camera or a production crew to capture great B-Roll. Your iPhone is more than enough.
What Kind of B-Roll Should You Film?
Here are some of the most effective types of B-Roll for small business content:
• Hands — typing, packaging an order, creating your product, holding your phone
• Products — flat lays, close-ups, lifestyle shots of your product in use
• Your space — your studio, office, storefront, or filming corner
• People — you walking into frame, interacting with a product, or working
• Process shots — anything that shows how you do what you do
• Detail shots — textures, labels, close ups of your tool and products
The key is to have a mix. Some clips with people, some without. The human element makes your content relatable. The detail shots and product footage make it look professional.

How to Use B-Roll in Your Videos
Once you have your B-Roll filmed, here is how to use it:
• Talking head with B-Roll: Start with yourself talking (A-Roll), then cut away to B-Roll clips that match what you are saying. This keeps viewers visually engaged.
• B-Roll montage with music: String together a series of beautiful clips set to music. No talking needed, just visuals and a vibe.
• B-Roll with text and music: Add text overlays to your B-Roll clips to deliver your message visually. Great for viewers watching on silent.
• Voiceover with B-Roll: Record yourself speaking, then lay B-Roll footage over the top so your voice drives the video while the visuals tell the story.
This is an example of how you layer the b-roll in your timeline while editing.
